  • Say 'One Mississippi'
Subject: USSA J3 Eastern Alpine Finals Killington VT In the time it takes to say 'One Mississippi' 10 different alpine racers would cross the finish line. That's how close the margins were within the field of athletes at this year's USSA J3 Eastern Alpine Finals. Held March 8th through 11th, 150 athletes comprising state teams from the eastern USA gathered at Killington VT to decide who would take the final 10 spots on the USSA Eastern Junior Olympic Team. Warm weather and poor snow conditions wreaked havoc with the event forcing the cancellation of the SG speed event on Friday. Despite the conditions race organizers were able to hold 3 qualifying races. (2 Giant Slalom and 1 Slalom) Local athlete Jessie Kuzmicki from Pownal, VT, last week earned a spot on the Vermont State Team allowing her to compete in this event. She posted strong results in all 3 races at Killington; 17th in GS1, 15th in GS2, and 10th (medalist) in Slalom for a combined 16th place overall for the 3 day event, however, falling short a coveted spot on the USSA Junior Olympic Team by 11 places (or... One Mississippi). Despite missing a repeat of her 2010 JO appearance Ms. Kuzmicki's 2012 alpine season highlights did include: 1st place finish in J3 Southern VT Council GS at Mount Snow VT (2) 4th places finishes in VPA High School GS at Okemo VT (as a freshman from MAU) 7th place finish in USSA J3 Eastern Regional Series GS at Whiteface NY 10th place finish in USSA J3 Eastern Regional Final SL at Killington VT 11th place finish in VT J3 State Championship SG at Sugarbush VT She finishes the 2012 season ranked 4th overall for her age in Southern Vermont.
