By Tony Jimenez VIRGINIA WATER, England (Reuters) - The golfing world must unite behind the new ban on the anchoring of putters from 2016 and avoid any unseemly legal disputes, according to Royal & Ancient (R&A) chief executive Peter Dawson. The ban was announced by the game's rule makers, the R&A and the United States Golf Association, on Tuesday, and Dawson has implored the rest of the sport to fall in line behind the regulation. The U.S. PGA Tour and the PGA of America, who both emphatically oppose the rule, said they were against the ban and are planning to evaluate their positions. ...

By Tony Jimenez VIRGINIA WATER (Reuters) - Golf's governing bodies announced on Tuesday that they will ban the anchoring of putters from 2016 in a move which will please traditionalists but could lead to a split in the game among the professional ranks. The ban was first proposed by the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA) in November. Players and the golfing community were then given 90 days in which to discuss the proposal. Despite 3 hard falls, a disqualification, and a scoreless weekend at Okemo Mountain in the J3 Vt State Championships on March 3rd and 4th, Jessie Kuzmicki, age 14 from Pownal, VT remained undeterred and bounced back this past weekend at Burke Mountain in the final State qualifier of the season. Kuzmicki finishing 24th in slalom and 25th in giant slalom combined with her 11th place in the State Super G last month managed to score enough points to qualify for one of the 11 spots on the VT State Finals Team.
Other State teams from Virginia to Maine will travel to Killington on March 8-11 and join Vermont's team for the USSA J3 Eastern Regional Finals. These 160 athletes will battle for the last 10 openings on the USSA J3 Eastern Junior Olympic Team. There will be 5 female and 5 male spots awarded to individuals based on results.
Although the stakes are high and the odds even higher, Ms. Kuzmicki remains determined to race on to the season's final finish line.
